Scholarships are competitive, and preference is given to those with a demonstrated need who represent under-served people and communities. They also allow us to invest in individuals who share our vision and want to be champions for the movement.

Three types of scholarships are available:

  1. Full-ride Greenbuild Scholarship: Full conference registration, travel stipend, three hotel nights, and one year subscription to Education @USGBC
  2. Greenbuild, Affordable Homes, Sustainable Communities Summit Scholarship: Summit registration, Greenbuild full conference registration, and one year subscription to Education @USGBC
  3. Affordable Homes, Sustainable Communities Summit Scholarship: Summit registration and one year subscription to Education @USGBC

At Greenbuild 2013, the green building community came together to participate in 200 educational sessions, build a city of 700 booths in the expo hall, and dance to the likes of Bon Jovi. All of this networking, learning, and celebrating resulted in 115,875 pounds of trash, 3,559 gallons of fuel used for shuttles, and 26,655 square feet of signage. It also led to 4,592 pounds of food donated locally, engagement with 25 hotels on sustainability practices and one new adventure playground for Philadelphia’s youth.

As the premier gathering of green building professionals, Greenbuild is committed to managing and measuring these impacts of our annual convention. The Greenbuild 2013 Sustainability Report details our key performance metrics, progress against seven objectives, and features eight case studies on unique processes from exhibitor engagement to an integrated sourcing process. We hope this report will provide the industry with an instructive case study, enabling others to learn from both our best practices and challenges.

Since 2002, Greenbuild’s robust sustainability program has integrated the green building principles discussed in education sessions and expo halls into our conference operations. In turn, Greenbuild attendees have come to expect composting, green hotel practices, and carbon offsets as standard fare. The Sustainability Report, an annual report,  describes the practices used in 2013 to create a conference that uses fewer resources, creates healthy spaces and positively affects the community – like any green building.

Our sustainability successes in 2013 include:

  • Helping the LEED-Certified Pennsylvania Convention Center quintuple its waste diversion from landfill rate to 67% the week of Greenbuild. This accomplishment was due to six months of work by a cross-organizational waste planning team, the purchase of 500 new waste bins, composting throughout the Center for the first time and the critical contributions of hundreds of recycling volunteers.
  • Our first daylit special set room using natural light. We know that daylight and views are important. As part of our special sets program, we introduced a room  with natural light to our educational offerings, bringing daylight and expansive views of Philadelphia into eight Greenbuild sessions.
  • Working with the Delaware Valley Green Building Council to engage, educate and support the Philadelphia hospitality community in compliance with new energy and water benchmarking and reporting regulations in Philadelphia..
  • A partnership with the Delaware Valley Green Building Council, Smith Memorial Playground and Public Workshop on the 2013 Greenbuild Legacy Project to create a youth-built “Adventure Playground” at Smith’s historic facility in East Fairmount Park.

We are grateful to our vendors, partners, host committee volunteers, student volunteers, attendees, exhibitors, and the Pennsylvania Convention Center for their partnership in creating one of the country’s greenest tradeshows.

Download the report and let us know what you think.
